Border Collie Male: Registered, Fully Trained for herding large and small livestock
Posted by Wall2Wall (2 items)
Well trained and experienced Border Collie male. A senior dog, with lots of life left in him looking for a new job opportunity. Current employer being forced to sell due to health issues and limitations.
This is a dog experienced and handled over the years by multiple handlers and trainers, adding to his technic and basic great instinct and stellar bloodlines which gave him a great edge in his herding ability. Experienced with all styles of livestock, large and small from lambs, sheep or goats to calves, cows and steers. His ability to herd is limited only to the livestock you have available for him to work with. This is very eager to please dog with a good stop and quite off time attitude. The to work command is limited to the addition of a staff (or any type of stick, post, limb from the nearest tree, we often just kept a piece of PVC pipe near the corrals.) and he knows that work time is now. On the other end, he does have an off switch. This is a dog who is happy to just be with you, running alongside the quad all day, ready when you are. He has been used for training pups and can read the necessary balance without the necessity for intervention by the trainer who can stay focused on the pup in training, not requiring any correction for Skeet to keep the sheep perfectly balanced to augment the training.
This is a great dog for any level of handler. Preference will be given to someone who can provide the assurance of a forever home for this great dog as well as a history of dog ownership of other herding dogs.
He is registered and from a great and long line of working champions working Border Collies. Pedigree is available on our website. Health tested for genetically testable issues by PawPrint Genetics. Hips and Elbows certified. His daughter was the 2016 BC Novice stock dog of the year under another stellar breeder. He has provided pups for several top breeders across North America, many high ranking competitive herding dogs, as well as for interactive sports and agility competitors and many, many family homes (without behaviour issues now associated with the Border Collie breed).
He is good with children (but does not play catch or other toy involved games), cats and other dogs. He does have his own pet cat and trains all the kittens born here to stay close to home (not sure how he does this but it is true). He would be happiest with a man that is just around all day, working his operation allowing him to stay close, when not working, but has been trained to relax and not be barky in his kennel or larger yard. It has to be noted that he is a herding dog and as such for placements with small children, caution must be used as he will herd all things that he feels need to be kept safely contained, including children or kittens... which he does not hurt but may appear to snap at in his attempts to keep them in line... he is afterall a working dog.
